A few things to know

  • This is an estimate based on the IRS standard mileage rate method. The other option — the actual-expenses method (gas, maintenance, insurance, depreciation) — isn't covered here.
  • For each business trip, the IRS expects a contemporaneous record of the date, destination, and business purpose. Your odometer at the start and end of the year helps too.
  • Commuting from home to a regular workplace doesn't count. Trips between job sites, to clients, or to temporary work locations generally do.
  • This tool gives you a ballpark, not tax advice. Talk to a tax professional about your specific situation.
