A few things to know
- This is an estimate based on the IRS standard mileage rate method. The other option — the actual-expenses method (gas, maintenance, insurance, depreciation) — isn't covered here.
- For each business trip, the IRS expects a contemporaneous record of the date, destination, and business purpose. Your odometer at the start and end of the year helps too.
- Commuting from home to a regular workplace doesn't count. Trips between job sites, to clients, or to temporary work locations generally do.
