About the math

  • Uses 2026 federal income tax brackets and the 2026 standard deduction (Single $15,000, MFJ $30,000, MFS $15,000, HoH $22,500).
  • Self-employment tax is 15.3% on the first $176,100 of SE earnings (Social Security wage base) and 2.9% above. SE tax is applied to 92.35% of net earnings, the standard Schedule SE base.
  • Half of your SE tax is deducted from gross income before federal income tax is calculated, matching the Schedule 1 adjustment.

This is an estimate, not tax advice. State income tax, additional Medicare tax (0.9% above $200K), self-employed health insurance, retirement contributions, the QBI deduction, and safe-harbor rules are all out of scope. Talk to a CPA before sending money to the IRS based on a number from a website.
